Toshiba’s Distributed Database for IoT and Big Data GridDB® Wins The Database Society of Japan Industrial Achievement Award

KAWASAKI―Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) and Toshiba Corporate Manufacturing Engineering Center have won the 2019 The Database Society of Japan (DBSJ) Industrial Achievement Award for the development and commercialization of GridDB as a distributed database for IoT and Big Data. Toshiba is recognized as a major contributor in the development of database technology and industry in Japan.
Toshiba developed proprietary technology such as the “Hybrid Cluster Management”*1 and “Autonomous Data Distribution Algorithm (ADDA)”*2 to provide GridDB with the needed reliability and flexibility. First commercialization of GridDB in 2013 was aimed at providing a scale-out database that can process high volume of IoT and Big Data rapidly. The performance and usability of GridDB has been continuously improved thenceforth. The latest version featured petabyte-scale data management with a small number of servers, and data processing in the order of milliseconds*3. In collaboration with Toshiba Corporate Manufacturing Engineering Center, GridDB technologies are used in the IoT and Big Data management system at the manufacturing sites to improve productivity.
Our commitment towards open innovation and value creation is reflected with the release of open-source GridDB in 2016 where we aimed to enhance GridDB’s technology together with the open source community, and encourage creation of new value by improving GridDB’s interoperability. To further accelerate open innovation, we plan to open source GridDB’s SQL interface previously available in the commercial version. Opening SQL―widely known as the gold standard of database interface―will ease GridDB’s integration with other applications.
Future development will continue towards the support for digital transformation and cyber physical system using IoT and Big Data.
- *1 Hybrid cluster management:
GridDB’s autonomous cluster architecture solves the problem of both Master-Slave and Peer-to-Peer model. Master node is automatically selected from the nodes and re-elected immediately in the case of node failure.
- *2 Autonomous Data Distribution Algorithm (ADDA):
The proprietary Autonomous Data Distribution Algorithm ADDA eliminates the needs for a mediation server between the client and the database by managing data arrangement and replication between nodes. Communication and data processing overhead are significantly reduced while maintaining the reliability, availability and performance of the database.
