Accelerating digital transformation by IoT
Digital society connects all types of things and people through networks. Digital transformation - creating new value by combining big data such as data from the IoT (Internet of Things) with AI (Artificial Intelligence) - is growing more widespread in various fields.
Toshiba promotes digital transformation in its own business fields. By doing so, it creates rich value, supports people's lives and contributes to the realization of sustainable society. We co-create new value together with our customers.
Structures of industries around the world are undergoing massive transformation as the result of digitalization in what is being called the “Fourth Industrial Revolution.” The impact is especially pronounced for the manufacturing industry, with economic value shifting from the conventional functional value of objects alone to the usage and experience value provided to customers.
To survive in this new era and become even more competitive, it is becoming increasingly important to shift to a new business model that creates greater value for objects by leveraging digital technologies such as IoT, big data, and AI.
In order to support this digital transformation, as well as to transform itself, Toshiba created the Toshiba IoT SPINEX. SPINEX combines the latest technologies of the Toshiba Group with the experience and expertise it has cultivated in a wide range of industries and worksites, including the manufacturing, social infrastructure and energy fields. Toshiba provides industrial IoT solutions that connect technologies, products, and services to transform business models of customers.
Digital twins, the heart of CPS
Cyber Physical System (CPS) is the core technology that enables digital transformation in the manufacturing, social infrastructure and energy fields. Various real-world phenomena are captured by sensors, and these conditions are reproduced in cyberspace as "digital twins." They are used to predict failures, simulate equipment and processes, and improve their operation rates. Digital models and the latest simulation technology algorithms are key elements of CPS.
In order to visualize, analyze, and respond to constantly changing site conditions, one must select what data will be of use in solving industry and worksite problems, as well as deciding how to collect and analyze this data.
Toshiba has extensive experience with the manufacturing, operation and maintenance of devices and products in a very wide range of fields, including manufacturing, social infrastructure and energy. This actual worksite experience has enabled it to create and supply highly practical digital twins. These digital twins are combined with Toshiba’s advanced AI and simulation technologies to meet the sophisticated needs of diverse customers.
The goal of Toshiba IoT SPINEX is to create new value by connecting things. It links worksite assets and expands the scope of digital transformation to entire companies, and then to entire societies. It drives the evolution of the IoT through visualization and remote monitoring, and promotes overall optimization, automation, and autonomization to create high value-added services, connects various services to create more livable societies.
Big data from worksites is analyzed to predict failures and perform optimization, and AI is used to carry out rule-based automated operation and control while making future predictions. Rules are also dynamically generated to produce the ability to respond autonomously to changing situations and environments.
Creating new business models
Toshiba Digital Solutions strives to create and implement new business models through co-creation with customers and partners utilizing the remote monitoring and control technologies it has developed over the years. Digital solutions based on Toshiba IoT SPINEX are the platforms used to rapidly achieve these business transformations.
